    Role of gut microbiota-generated short chain fatty acids in metabolic and cardiovascular health

    Purpose of this Review: This review assesses the latest evidence linking short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) with host metabolic health and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and presents the latest evidence on possible biological mechanisms. Recent Findings: SCFA have a range of effects locally in the gut and at both splanchnic and peripheral tissues which together appear to induce improved metabolic regulation and have direct and indirect effects on markers of CVD risk. Summary: SCFA produced primarily from the microbial fermentation of dietary fibre appear to be key mediators of the beneficial effects elicited by the gut microbiome. Not only does dietary fibre fermentation regulate microbial activity in the gut, SCFA also directly modulate host health through a range of tissue-specific mechanisms related to gut barrier function, glucose homeostasis, immunomodulation, appetite regulation and obesity. With the increasing burden of obesity worldwide, the role for gut microbiota-generated SCFA in protecting against the effects of energy dense diets offers an intriguing new avenue for regulating metabolic health and CVD risk

    Personal Food Computer: A new device for controlled-environment agriculture

    Due to their interdisciplinary nature, devices for controlled-environment agriculture have the possibility to turn into ideal tools not only to conduct research on plant phenology but also to create curricula in a wide range of disciplines. Controlled-environment devices are increasing their functionalities as well as improving their accessibility. Traditionally, building one of these devices from scratch implies knowledge in fields such as mechanical engineering, digital electronics, programming, and energy management. However, the requirements of an effective controlled environment device for personal use brings new constraints and challenges. This paper presents the OpenAg Personal Food Computer (PFC); a low cost desktop size platform, which not only targets plant phenology researchers but also hobbyists, makers, and teachers from elementary to high-school levels (K-12). The PFC is completely open-source and it is intended to become a tool that can be used for collective data sharing and plant growth analysis.     Learning from the implementation of Universal Free School Meals in Scotland using Normalisation Process Theory:Lessons for policymakers to engage multiple stakeholders

    In 2014/15, Universal Free School Meals (UFSM) were introduced in Scotland and England for children in their first three years of primary school. This study examined the implementation of UFSM in Scotland using Noramlisation Process Theory (NPT), a middle-range theory of implementation, to identify areas of learning for policymakers wishing to introduce or extend similar policies. NPT is predominantly used to evaluate interventions or new technologies in healthcare settings. Qualitative data were collected across Scotland using a case study approach shortly after implementation (n = 29 school-level stakeholders) and in the following school year (n = 18 school-level stakeholders and n = 19 local authority-level stakeholders). Observations of lunchtime in each school were conducted at both timepoints. Data were analysed using a thematic framework approach using NPT constructs and sub-constructs. Results suggested education and catering stakeholders experiences of implementation diverged most around the NPT concepts of coherence, cognitive participation, and reflexive monitoring. Lack of coherence around the purpose and long-term benefits of UFSM appeared to reduce education stakeholders’ willingness to engage with the policy beyond operational issues. In contrast, catering stakeholders identified a direct benefit to their everyday work and described receiving additional resources to deliver the policy. Overall, participants described an absence of monitoring data around the areas of greatest salience for education stakeholders. This study successfully used NPT to identify policy learning around school meals. Policymakers must increase the salience of such intersectoral policies for all relevant stakeholders involved before policy implementation, and plan adequate monitoring to evaluate potential long-term benefits

    Knowledge Translation of Interprofessional Collaborative Patient-Centred Practice: The Working Together Project Experience

    The Working Together (WT) project involved the design and delivery of an online learning resource for healthcare teams in long-term care (LTC) so that knowledge regarding interprofessional collaborative patient-centred practice (ICPCP) could be readily accessed and then transferred to the workplace. The purpose of this paper is to better understand the process of knowledge translation in continuing education for healthcare professionals by documenting our experiences using Lavis et al.’s (2003) organizing framework for knowledge transfer, and highlighting the impact this approach had on the design, development, delivery, and evaluation of the WT program. Fifty-nine pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and nurse practitioners from 17 LTC homes across Ontario, Canada participated in this project. The effectiveness of the knowledge translation of ICPCP through the WT project was evaluated using the Demand-Driven Learning Model (DDLM) evaluation tool (MacDonald, Breithaupt, Stodel, Farres, & Gabriel, 2002) to assess learners’ reactions to the learning resource. Data from quantitative pre-post surveys and qualitative interviews revealed that learners found using the WT online resource to be a satisfactory learning experience, obtained new knowledge and skills regarding ICPCP, transferred knowledge to the workplace, and reported that learning had a positive effect on the residents they cared for.Le projet Working Together (WT) comprend la conception et la production d’une ressource d’apprentissage en ligne pour les équipes de professionnels prodiguant des soins de santé de longue durée (SLD) afin que les connaissances relatives à la pratique interprofessionnelle en collaboration axée sur le patient (PICAP) puissent être facilement accessibles, puis transférées dans le milieu de travail. L’objectif de cet article est de mieux comprendre le processus d’application des connaissances dans la formation continue des professionnels de la santé en documentant notre expérience à l’aide de Lavis et coll. (2003), en établissant un cadre théorique pour le transfert des connaissances et en mettant en évidence l’incidence de cette approche sur la conception, le développement, la réalisation et l’évaluation du programme WT. Cinquante-neuf pharmaciens, médecins, infirmiers et infirmières, infirmiers et infirmières praticiens de 17 centres de SLD en Ontario, au Canada, ont participé à ce projet. L’efficacité de l’application des connaissances de la PICAP à l’échelle du projet WT a été évaluée à l’aide du modèle d’apprentissage axé sur la demande (DDLM) (MacDonald, Breithaupt, Stodel, Farres et Gabriel, 2002) afin de déterminer les réactions des apprenants à la ressource d’apprentissage. Des données tirées de prétest et de postest quantitatifs ainsi que d’entrevues qualitatives ont révélé que les apprenants étaient satisfaisants de l’expérience d’apprentissage que procure la ressource en ligne WT, qu’ils ont acquis de nouvelles connaissances et aptitudes concernant la PICAP et mis en application ces connaissances dans leur milieu de travail, et que l’apprentissage a eu un effet positif sur les pensionnaires dont ils prennent soin

    Dynamic Data Driven Methods for Self-aware Aerospace Vehicles

    A self-aware aerospace vehicle can dynamically adapt the way it performs missions by gathering information about itself and its surroundings and responding intelligently. Achieving this DDDAS paradigm enables a revolutionary new generation of self-aware aerospace vehicles that can perform missions that are impossible using current design, flight, and mission planning paradigms. To make self-aware aerospace vehicles a reality, fundamentally new algorithms are needed that drive decision-making through dynamic response to uncertain data, while incorporating information from multiple modeling sources and multiple sensor fidelities.In this work, the specific challenge of a vehicle that can dynamically and autonomously sense, plan, and act is considered. The challenge is to achieve each of these tasks in real time executing online models and exploiting dynamic data streams–while also accounting for uncertainty. We employ a multifidelity approach to inference, prediction and planning an approach that incorporates information from multiple modeling sources, multiple sensor data sources, and multiple fidelities

    Process evaluation of the implementation of Universal Free School Meals (UFSM) for P1 to P3: Research with Schools and Local Authorities

    In January 2015, Scotland moved from a targeted system of Free School Meals (FSM) to a service providing universal free school meals (UFSM) for all children in Primaries 1 to 3 (P1-3). The targeted system remained for children in P4 and above. Since the launch of Hungry for Success in 2003, a series of policies and guidance has focused on school food reform and nutrient standards. The UFSM policy is set within this context alongside an increased policy focus on reducing health inequalities in Scotland. A theory of change was developed by NHS Health Scotland for UFSM provision. It was identified that key policy outcomes will be underpinned by a number of assumptions and that achievement of these outcomes will also be influenced by certain external factors. Further, it recognised that the implementation of UFSM may also generate positive and negative unintended consequences. NHS Health Scotland commissioned a research team from three universities to undertake a process evaluation of the implementation of the UFSM policy. The research was led by the Institute for Social Marketing at the University of Stirling, in collaboration with the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit at the University of Glasgow, and the Centre for Public Health Nutrition Research at the University of Dundee. The process evaluation comprised three main strands: research with parents, schools and local authorities. This report focuses on the research with schools and local authorities. A detailed report on the research with parents was published in October 2015
